The Recovery Process

What Is the Recovery Process?

The recovery process is an ongoing and unique personal process of working toward your treatment goals.

Remember that mental health recovery is a continuing process. It is okay to go one step at a time. Each person’s recovery experience will be different.

It is important that you work closely with your Treatment Team to help you through your recovery process. The schizophrenia recovery process can include:

  • Taking medication as prescribed
  • Counseling
  • Doing rehabilitation therapy
  • Setting and working toward treatment goals
  • Living and eating healthy

Finding the right schizophrenia medication is the first step to laying a foundation on your recovery journey. Following your treatment plan and taking your medicine helps control symptoms of schizophrenia – and delay time to relapse. With schizophrenia symptoms under control, you can focus on moving forward toward your treatment goals.

While there is no cure for schizophrenia, medication has been proven to help manage symptoms. Medication is only one part of the process, but by following your schizophrenia treatment plan and taking your medicine as prescribed, you can have the chance to control your schizophrenia, and begin setting and working toward treatment goals.

It is important that you have a voice in your treatment. The more open you are with your Treatment Team, the more they can help.

Tips to Stay on Track

If you face some challenges along the way, it is important to:

  • Be positive and be your own advocate
  • Have a support system in place to help you stay on track and keep motivated
  • Work with a Treatment Team that knows your treatment goals, relapse triggers, and warning signs of a relapse
  • Set a path, and keep moving forward toward your treatment goals

By making a personalized plan for managing a mental health condition, you have the best chance of working toward your treatment goals.
